RSC Shakespeare on Screen film season at the Barbican January 2016

December 22, 2015 Last updated: July 5, 2017 1:14 am By MissJulie

RSC Shakespeare on Screen filmThe Royal Shakespeare Company and the Barbican will be screening a series of past productions for the Shakespeare on Screen season in January 2016.

Created by the RSC, Shakespeare on Screen is a special festival that will show ‘captivating, rare and never-before-screened productions from 50 years of Shakespeare in performance’. The film season will present nine titles which have been selected from the archive of RSC work on stage or rec-conceived film and television, ranging from a rarely seen partial recording of Peter Hall’s 1959 staging of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to David Tennant’s acclaimed performance in the title role of Hamlet in 2008.

Shakespeare on Screen will run alongside the RSC’s King and Country plays at the Barbican Cinema from 9th to 31st January 2016, in the year that marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.

The programme of screened performances in the Shakespeare on Screen season is listed below:

• 9th January: Macbeth (1979) with Ian McKellen and Judi Dench
• 10th January: RSC panel discussion led by Judith Buchanan with current RSC artistic director Gregory Doran and other guests
• 10th January: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1959), a rarely-seen partial recording of Peter Hall’s acclaimed staging
• 11th January: The War of the Roses: Henry VI (1965) with Janet Suzman
• 11th January: The War of the Roses: Edward IV (1965) with Peggy Ashcroft as Queen Margaret, Donald Sinden as the Duke of York and Roy Dotrice as Edward IV
• 12th January: The War of the Roses: Richard III (1965) with Janet Suzman and Eric Porter
• 17th January: Othello (1990) with Ian McKellen, Willard White, Imogen Stubbs and Zoe Wannamaker
• 19th January: As You Like It (1963), Michael Elliott’s production with Vanessa Redgrave as Rosalind
• 23rd January: King Lear (1971), Peter Brook’s production
• 24th January: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1996) with Lindsay Duncan, Alex Jennings and Desmond Barritt

RSC Shakespeare on Screen is curated by John Wyver, RSC Director of Screen Productions, in association with the Barbican.
