Touch is the fourth exciting new collaboration between Soho Theatre and DryWrite. Touch follows Dee – Welsh, fun, lonely, full of love but with all the complexities, mess and doubt that a single 33-year-old living in a shoebox flat in London can possibly have – at a pivotal point of her life, and her encounters with five people she invites into her home.

Soho Theatre’s relationship with DryWrite’s co-Artistic Directors (Vicky Jones and Phoebe Waller-Bridge) now spans eight years. Waller-Bridge’s professional stage debut was at Soho Theatre, in Steve Thompson’s acclaimed five-hander Roaring Trade in 2008. Building on this relationship, in 2011 Waller-Bridge and Jones approached Soho Theatre to do an evening of shorts (which included the first outings for Fleabag and Crashing, both now turned into TV shows) soon followed by DryWrite’s first full-length production at Soho Theatre, Jack Thorne’s lauded two-hander Mydidae (2012), with Waller-Bridge and Kier Charles, directed by Jones, which later transferred to the West End.

Turned into television’s must-see hit of the summer, Fleabag began as a one-woman show written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and dramaturged and directed by Vicky Jones. First previewing at Soho Theatre, following the successful evening of shorts, Fleabag made its highly acclaimed Edinburgh Festival Fringe premiere in 2013 before three sold out Soho Theatre runs, a UK national tour (performed by Maddie Rice), and an international run in South Korea. Winner of multiple stage, performer and playwright awards, and nominated for an Olivier Award, the stage play became a six-part comedy series this year, first on BBC Three before transferring to BBC Two following its phenomenal cult following, the success emulated in America on Amazon Prime.

Announced as the 2013 Verity Bargate Award winner (Soho Theatre’s prestigious biennial competition to find the
best new play from an emerging writer), already an experienced director, The One was Vicky Jones’ fearless debut
play. The tight and vicious three-hander with caustic and hilarious dialogue, starring Waller-Bridge, was staged at Soho Theatre in 2014. Directed by Soho Theatre’s Artistic Director Steve Marmion, The One is characteristic of DryWrite’s work, raising questions about modern life through stories about funny, dangerous, complex female characters.

Now, looking forward to 2017, Touch is a DryWrite commission written and directed by Jones. Starring Amy Morgan whose credits include Mr Selfridge, The Beaux’ Stratagem at the National and Hay Fever (2012) in the West End (alongside Waller-Bridge) along with Travesties set to transfer to the West End. Full cast for Touch will be announced in the new year.

We love working with DryWrite. Vicky and Phoebe have been creating work with us for many years and this ongoing relationship is one example of our commitment to the most exciting talent, alongside our six new commissions – Soho Six – to artists such as Theresa Ikoko and Jessie Cave.’ Adam Brace, Associate Dramaturg, Soho Theatre.
