“The Real Love: The Musical” was part of a vegan red carpet event that premiered to a sold-out audience of 3,000 people at the historic Pasadena Civic Auditorium in the US. All five of the Hollywood celebrity emcees for the event were fabulously vegetarian or vegan.
The distinguished composer Al Kasha, a two-time Academy Award-winner, was inspired to create this musical based on the extraordinary life story of Supreme Master Ching Hai, world-renowned humanitarian and vegan advocate.
Relive the love story of Thanh, a tender-hearted Aulacese (Vietnamese) woman helping war-torn refugees, and Rolf, a handsome German physician. He is a man of science while she is a woman of faith and a vegetarian with an inexhaustible compassion for all those suffering. But as their happy marriage blossoms, a calling propels Thanh to make a heartrending decision – remain with her beloved or sacrifice everything in search of happiness for all humanity.
In what seems a destined journey, she embarks on travels through India and the Himalayas, encountering adventure, danger, and surprises along the way. This unforgettable story is sure to bring tears, laughter, and poignant memories for audiences of all backgrounds.
This musical stars West End’s Joanna Ampil as Thanh, Tony winners Daisy Eagan (The Secret Garden) and Cady Huffman (The Producers), and Tony nominees Adam Pascal (Rent) and Robert Torti (Starlight Express).
“It’s a real story, I’m playing a real person here,” said lead actress Joanna Ampil in an interview. “And it’s been such a wonderful journey for me because for this particular part, I’ve turned VEGAN. So that in itself is a gift.”
Also featured are impressive guest stars including Tony Award-winning Broadway stars Betty Buckley (Cats), Oscar-winning Hollywood star Shirley Jones (Carousel), and Trent Kowalik (Billy Elliot the Musical).
They perform the powerful title song, “The Real Love,” about peace and love for all, including humans and animals. It reflects the heart, wisdom and humor inherent in Supreme Master Ching Hai’s poetry. Here is an excerpt:
“Let’s share the splendid Earth
And do everything to make it better
Even the worms don’t rival
With the butterflies or the birds
Why do we humans try so mightily?
Against each other
Make life a real misery
And even shorter!”
“Why always boast about our Heavenly root:
Oh! Almighty God’s beloved children!
While our life is tainted with all evils
While our survival
Is the cost of others’ extinction!
Brilliant original music for the musical was created by esteemed composers: Oscar and 5-time Emmy winner Bill Conti (Rocky), 2-time Oscar winner Al Kasha (Seven Brides for Seven Brothers), Emmy winner Doug Katsaros (Footloose), Tony and Emmy winner Don Pippin (Mame), and Oscar and 2-time Grammy winner David Shire (Saturday Night Fever). They set to song the melodious poetry of Supreme Master Ching Hai, the event’s guest of honor who attended via live videoconference.
“If we have love, all good will come our way,” said Supreme Master in a speech. “We can start to love now, today, and continue tomorrow into the future. Love yourself, love your family, love your neighbors, love all around us. Without love in our heart, we are almost nothing, just a burden to ourselves, to loved ones, and society. Love is not a word on our lips, love must be our feeling inside, and action translated outside. Love the animals – we’ll be veg. Love the Earth – we’ll go green. Love the world – save the planet. … Be vegan, make peace. That’s all we have to do, and love.”
