Superstar Update: Friday 20th July 2012

Jesus Christ SuperstarThe first week is over and there are now five left in the Superstar competition, with two leaving on Friday night’s sing-off. Jon Moses and Jeff Anderson were the two to go.

The performances tonight:
Jon seemed to have taken a somewhat safe way to sing U2’s I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, and voters probably recognised that he doesn’t quite have the vocal range for this role. He will however have no shortage of job opportunities coming his way and I am sure you will see him on stage somewhere before the end of the year.

I thought Jeff’s choice of song was a risk in that not too many people watching the show are likely to have Whole Lotta Love by Led Zepplin in their CD selection. But it certainly gave Jeff the chance to show how he can belt out a rock song! Jeff will also find job offers heading his way!

Roger gave a strong rendition of Feeling Good by Nina Simone, after which Andrew Lloyd Webber said “I can understand why people could follow you”.  Roger was subsequently placed in the bottom three by the voting audience, but was saved by ALW. I still don’t think this role is for Roger but I am sure he will not have a shortage of offers for major roles.

Ben again gave a super performance with Cold as Ice by Foreigner, after which Jason Donovan said “The standard this evening is off the scale.” No doubting that Ben is a super performer and has got to be a contender to win this.  ALW said of Ben “You have grown most in this competition”.

Rory again produced a first class performance with Keane’s Silenced By the Night. Having surprisingly been in the bottom two last night Rory again showed that he is also a contender to win this competition.

David gave a superb performance demonstrating his acting and singing skills with Apologise by Timbaland. The song certainly allowed David to express himself in ways that emphasise his strengths. If David doesn’t get this role he will be on stage soon and probably in the West End.

Nathan was the final one to perform and he was in his favourite genre as he performed Sweet Child of Mine by Guns ‘n Roses. This was a rock-solid performance by a top performer. If Nathan doesn’t win this he will surely get very close.

After months of auditions we will know who the winner is by next Wednesday, with no shows on at the weekend and resuming again on Monday. A chance for some well earned rest for the guys.

The audition process has been going on for several months and it is a shame that the celebration of success in the final days of Superstar will not be seen by many more than are currently watching the show, according to low viewing figures in the press. Sorry to say but ITV have struggled to retain the higher standards that have usually been seen on the BBC. Add to that the fact that the British public have probably had enough of reality TV shows and need a break from them – the fall in audience figures is not surprising.

No matter how many viewers watch the last few shows it will not detract from the high quality of performers left in the competition. If you haven’t seen Superstar yet, you really should tune in next week as you will see some first class talent.
