Take a Deep Breath and Breathe by Bola Agbaje

DonovanTake a Deep Breath and Breathe written by Bola Agbaje and directed by Toby Clarke.

When Donovan dies in an unprovoked attack, Paul is left lost after the death of his best friend, Andrew can’t drag himself away from his X Box, Ryan is too vexed to think straight and their girlfriends are all hatching a plan to make them see revenge isn’t so bitter sweet.

After a sold-out run at Ovalhouse during the London Festival this honest, hilarious and moving new play transfers to the Bussey Building with the same cast and a refreshed script exploring identity, sexual power and ultimately asking what it really takes to be young in London.

A new play written by award-winning writer Bola Agbaje, inspired by Aristophanes’ comedy, Lysistrata.

“A lively cast of emerging talent plays out the peer pressures, pop psychology on men and women…with the audience seated in the action, lending to the intimacy and fractious nature of their relationships as the lighting sharply moves from one scene in a corner of the theatre to another.” AFRIDIZIAK.COM

Bola Agbaje, Writer, was a member of the Young Writers’ Programme at the Royal Court Theatre, and her first play, Gone too Far!, premiered upstairs at the Court in 2007, directed by Bijan Sheibani, and then transferred downstairs for a sell out run in 2008. The play won the 2008 Oliver Award for an Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliated Theatre. Bola was also nominated the same year for the Evening Standard Awards for Most Promising Playwright of 2008.

Her other plays for theatre include: Belong (Tiata Fahodzi at Royal Court Theatre; 2012); Three Blind Mice (Cardboard Citizens, 2011); Playing The Game (Tricycle Theatre, 2010); My Territory (Soho Theatre, 2010); Off The Endz (Royal Court Theatre Downstairs, 2010); Anything You Can Do (Soho Theatre – Everything Must Go season, 2009); Detaining Justice (Tricycle Theatre, 2009 – part of the Not Black And White season, appearing alongside plays by Roy Williams and Kwame Kwei-Armah); Legend Of Moremi (Theatre Royal Stratford East, 2008); Good Neighbours (Talawa Unzipped at Young Vic, 2008); In Time (Tiata Fahodzi and Eastern Angles, 2008); Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word (Royal Court Tent at Latitude 2007); Reap What You Sow (Young Vic, 2007); Rivers Run Deep (Hampstead Theatre, 2007). Bola has also written a screen play adaptation of Gone Too Far! for Poisson Rouge Pictures and the BFI.

Toby Clarke, Director, this is Toby’s first professional production since leaving his role as Head of Youth Arts at Ovalhouse. During his time at Ovalhouse he directed plays by Arinze Kene and Rory Mullarkey. Toby is the co-founder of Sketty productions whose shows include Imogen, Feral and Tom’s. He has just been shortlisted for the Oxford Samuel Beckett Trust Award in association with the Barbican, and will be reviving his critically acclaimed show, Nine Rooms, in collaboration with Centrepoint in 2014 and has just been appointed as a Director for the Lyric Hammersmith’s Young Company. Toby is an Associate Director with Fourth Monkey Theatre Company and will be directing Oscar Wilde’s Salome at the Edinburgh Fringe this year.

Take a Deep Breath and Breathe is a production of 2Far Media, the Theatre, Film and Televison media company run by Bola Agbaje and Clive Holdsworth. This is a non-funded production with all the creative team and cast working in kind to support Director Toby Clarke’s vision to create work that showcases young talent, providing a platform for them to share their craft in order to further their careers in an ever toughening industry.
