The 2013 Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting Shortlist Announced

Theatre NewsThe Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting which began in 2005, is the biggest national competition for playwriting. It is the search for great new plays and great writers.

Since its creation there have been 11 writers who have been awarded a total of £120,000, with eight full productions and over 7000 entries generated.

For aspiring playwrights to established masters of the art, the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting discovers, promotes and produces the very best new writing for theatre.

A joint venture between the Royal Exchange Theatre and Bruntwood, the Manchester-based property company, the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting is unrivalled in its support for playwrights. The winner of the 2013 prize will receive £16,000, and there will also be three Judges’ Awards of £8,000 each. All four award winners will have the chance to develop their play with the Royal Exchange, with a view to production.

After over four months of deliberation, the shortlist of ten has been announced. These will then be finalised by judges who will present the winners at the Awards Ceremony at the Royal Exchange Theatre on Friday 22nd November.

Sarah Frankcom, Artistic Director of the Royal Exchange, Manchester said:
The shortlisted plays have embraced theatricality to tell striking stories, uncover new worlds and bring new insights into old worlds.  What we have seen is a beautiful sense of playwrights striving to take audiences on distinctive journeys, exploring form and the live shared experience unique to theatre. From 1800 entries we now have a shortlist of ten. We can’t wait to see how the judges respond to their imagination and daring.

Michael Oglesby, Judge and Chairman of Bruntwood added:
The Bruntwood Prize continues to be a catalyst for creative writing and a reflection of the UK’s passion for theatre. As both Chairman of Bruntwood and a judge of the competition, I am incredibly proud of the platform we have created for writers and I’m looking forward to opening the pages of this year’s shortlist.”
