The Merely Players form a Repertory Company to perform a different Shakespeare play every month.
The Merely Players are acknowledged for their impeccable delivery of Shakespeare, and they aim to deliver this on a new scale with a repertory season at The Cockpit Theatre, Marylebone. They open the season this February 16th, with one of Shakespeare’s earliest comedies: The Comedy of Errors.
“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” The Merely Players are devoted to presenting Shakespeare’s work in a way that fulfils this claim – that the world and all its humanity can be represented by words on a page portrayed truthfully on a stage. The company has reinvigorated its approach to production as well as performance, and has thrown down a gauntlet to its actors and audiences alike: to perform a different Shakespeare play every month.
This new repertory season will be resident to The Cockpit Theatre, Marylebone, playing for one night only on the middle Sunday of each month. The space allows for 240 seats in the round – a configuration that lends itself well to the high paced energy The Merely Players have become popular for successful productions of Henry V, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Hamlet.
The Merely Players will perform the plays without the aid of elaborate sets and costumes, and rely on a repertory company of twenty players that will perform in each of the plays, taking on roles large and small as they progress play by play through Shakespeare’s best works. Each show will be announced on the night the preceding show is performed to build anticipation and audience engagement.
A complex and compulsive farce, The Comedy of Errors will make the most of the in-the-round configuration of The Cockpit, as well as feeding into the Merely Players’ signature energetic style. Producer Paul Lichtenstern explained, “Comedy of Errors will serve as an excellent start to the season. As the lightest and most farcical of the bard’s comedies, it will provide us a fantastic springboard to showcase the energy and dynamism we’ve become so well known for over the years, while keeping impeccable text work at the heart of the performance. Farce will help us make the most of the in-the-round configuration of the theatre, while the play’s high proportion of verse and rhyme will showcase the mastery of text we strive for in every Shakespeare we approach. We are confident that this monthly, one-night-only format will compel audiences to keep coming back for more.”
About The Merely Players: The Merely Players were formed in 2009, initially from LAMDA graduates. Merely Players productions are always played at a fast pace and focus heavily on the audience’s understanding of the story through an impeccable standard of delivery of text.
After renowned productions of Henry V, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Hamlet, The Merely Players have formed a repertory company to stage a Shakespeare play every month.
