Cheek by Jowl’s The Revenger’s Tragedy will be the company’s first staged work in Italian, opening at the Barbican Theatre on 4th March 2020.

Created by Cheek by Jowl’s director Declan Donnellan and designer Nick Ormerod for Milan’s renowned Piccolo Teatro, The Revenger’s Tragedy is transformed into a macabre dance of death and performed by a charismatic ensemble of Italian actors – of which 10 are recent graduates from the Piccolo Drama School – Ivan Alovisio (Lussurioso), Marco Brinzi (Judge), Fausto Cabra (Vindice), Flavio Capuzzo Dolcetta (Junior), Christian Di Filippo (Supervacuo), Raffaele Esposito (Ippolito), Ruggero Franceschini (Bishop), Pia Lanciotti (The Duchess/Graziana), Errico Liguori (Spurio), Marta Malvestiti (Castizia), David Meden (Ambizioso), Massimiliano Speziani (The Duke), Beatrice Vecchione (Doctor), and Marouane Zotti (Jailer).

Our Q&A with Ivan Alovisio

Q: What thoughts on joining the cast of Thomas Middleton’s The Revenger’s Tragedy?
Ivan: It is a wonderful company; all the actors are talented and there has been such a fantastic atmosphere of artistic harmony among us.

Q: You play the part of Lussurioso – can you tell us about him?
Ivan: Lussurioso is the son of the Duke and the heir to the throne in a court characterised by ambition, bastard children, stepmothers and “useless” brothers. Through a series of events he ends up crowned, but then… I’ll stop there, as I don’t want to give away any spoilers.

Q: This is the first time Cheek by Jowl have staged work in Italian – what challenges have there been for you and the rest of the cast and creatives?
Ivan: I can speak for myself and for what I have seen in working with my companions. In general, we have tried to follow the indications of the director, contributing with our individuality, discussing, and following the flow of that which slowly emerged. This was a very satisfying process.

Q: Why should theatregoers get along to see this production?
Ivan: Because it is a play that has been very well-received in Italy.
