The Trials and Tribulations of Mr Pickwick at The Bridewell Theatre

Mr Pickwick
Nigel Nevinson as Mr Pickwick

Mr Pickwick departs on his travels and after several farcical misunderstandings he finds himself on trial for breach of promise of marriage. This entertaining one man play features a selection of well-loved characters from “The Pickwick Papers” and will appeal to both aficionados of Dickens and to people wanting to discover one of the best known novels in British literature.

Nigel Nevinson comes from a theatrical family. His mother, Nancy Nevinson, was a well respected actress and his sister Gennie Nevinson, an Australian resident, played Deidre in Muriel’s Wedding. His godmother was Dame Edith Evans. Nigel has been in nearly 100 plays and musicals since starting his career in weekly repertory in 1969.

Five years ago, Nigel said to friends in Australia that he should bring a play to the Adelaide Fringe as every year he visits his daughter who lives there. The friends suggested that the play should be quintessentially British like “The Pickwick Papers”. In 2012 whilst recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon Nigel wrote the adaptation and since then he has performed the play at the Brighton, Henley, Edinburgh, Adelaide Fringe Festivals and various other venues in the UK.

Performed and adapted from “The Pickwick Papers” by Nigel Nevinson. Directed by John O’Connor.
