Andrew Lloyd Webber’s incredible masterpiece The Phantom of The Opera, continues its unprecedented West End run. The Phantom of The Opera (in French Le Fantome de l’Opera) founded on Gaston Leroux’s gothic novel, is a haunting story of seduction and despair.
The Phantom of the Opera is set in the Paris Opera House during the 19th century, where the disfigured Phantom haunts and terrorizes its occupants. Based on a classic French thriller about a terrifying and legendary figure who emerges from the dark depths of The Opera House and manifests the mythic opera ghost in terrifying reality.
The mysterious masked Phantom falls in love with the young and beautiful soprano Christine and takes her away to his lair in the depths of the theatre to teach her to sing “like an angel”. Although at first Christine becomes entranced by him, she loves another: Raoul, a handsome nobleman, and patron of the Opera. She is faced with the choice of staying with the Phantom, or he will kill Raoul.
The Phantom of the Opera is without question Andrew Lloyd Webber’s jewel in his crown.
The Phantom of the Opera London Review
After more than 32 years in the West End, The Phantom of the Opera continues to sound marvellous. Manford puts in an engaging performance playing a tortured young woman under pressure, soliciting sympathy from the audience. Such a controlled and nuanced interpretation added depth to the production as a whole, and every high note was, in a word, impeccable. Enchanting as ever, The Phantom of the Opera remains vibrant and beautiful, and in fine form.
