Chicago, the longest-running American musical now in its 21st year on Broadway, is bringing the razzle-dazzle back to London’s West End.

Winner of six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and a Grammy award, the sexiest, sassiest, most sophisticated Broadway musical in history is now celebrating 21 incredible years of standing ovations.

The dazzling multi-award-winning prohibition-era tale of nightclub singer Roxie Hart, her cell-block rival Velma Kelly and the smooth-talking lawyer Billy Flynn has thrilled audiences in London, Broadway and across the world from Mexico City to Moscow, from Sao Paulo to South Africa since 1996.

With red-hot choreography by Ann Reinking in the style of Bob Fosse and a sizzling score featuring the classic songs “Razzle Dazzle”, “Cell Block Tango” and “All That Jazz”, Chicago is so good it should be illegal.

Chicago is an American musical, with Music by John Kander, Lyrics by Fred Ebb, and Book by Ebb and Bob Fosse. The story is set in Prohibition-era Chicago, the musical is based on a 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about factual criminals and crimes she reported on. The story is essentially a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and portrays the concept of the celebrity criminal.

The original Broadway production opened in 1975 at the 46th Street Theatre and ran for 936 performances until 1977. Bob Fosse choreographed the original production. Following a West End debut in 1979 which ran for 600 performances, Chicago was revived on Broadway in 1996, and the following year in London’s West End.

The latest Broadway revival of Chicago (at the Ambassador Theatre) holds the record as the longest-running musical revival and the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. It is the second longest-running show in Broadway history, behind The Phantom of the Opera.

Chicago returns to London’s West End at the Phoenix Theatre from 26th March 2018.

A nightclub singer, a double-murderess, a smooth-talking lawyer and a cell block of sin: it would be a crime to miss it.

From our review of Chicago at the Churchill Theatre, Bromley in 2016
From what is considered one of the most well-known and celebrated musicals of all time, Chicago proves that it still has much to show and offer.

Murder, greed, corruption, exploitation, adultery and treachery… all those things we hold near and dear to our hearts”.
