5 Star Review for Sleeping Booty at Leicester Square Theatre

Sleeping BootyAs Christmas draws closer and everything around us takes on a festive form, we must give a big cheer for the arrival of the all important panto season. Christmas without a jolly family pantomime would just be wrong, wrong on so many levels. Speaking of things that are wrong on so many levels, there is one panto you should give some serious consideration to watching, Sleeping Booty!

In 2012 Stuart Saint wrote and directed an adult pantomime for the Lounge at Leicester Square Theatre, he offered us his Dick. Dick was a hilarious yet filthy take on the popular tale of Dick Whittington. Saint’s Dick was so entertaining he got it out again in 2013, keeping people entertained for yet another Christmas. So here we are, Christmas 2014 and it is time for a third serving of filth and this time Saint is offering us his booty, his Sleeping Booty. Saints take on the classic fairytale Sleeping Beauty is a rip-roaringly funny pantomime packed full of filth, crude and coarse humour and innuendo that would make a sailor blush.

Sleeping Booty has all the elements of a highly entertaining pantomime, including popular songs, upbeat dance routines, lovable characters, evil characters, audience participation and lots of camp Christmas cheer. Whilst the show may contain these vital pantomime ingredients it does also come with added extras, making it a panto experience unlike any other.

Saint’s razor sharp writing skills combined with the performance skills of a small yet perfectly formed cast of talented and fearless actors, makes this is one hell of a Christmas cracker. The headline performer, Miss Dusty ‘O’ (David Hodge) in the role of The Evil Mangelina is sheer perfection. No stranger to keeping crowds of people entertained, Miss Dusty ‘O’ has to be one of the most well-known drag queens in the country and most certainly in the London cabaret and club scene. There is so much packed into this show, the energy starts off exceedingly high and hardly wavers for even a moment.

The beauty of this show is in the delivery and presentation, of course the writing gives it the necessary foundation, without it there would be no show to speak of. The cast really are exceptional and have clearly worked very hard to deliver such a slick, funny and fast-paced show. If you are easily offended or you do not have the capacity to appreciate a crass, sexually explicit joke then this probably is not the festive feast for you. However, if you do want to ring in Christmas with a dirty joke or fifty then get yourself some tickets for Sleeping Booty, but be warned you may leave the theatre with a sore face from laughing so much.
