Read our Q&A with Frankie Duncan (Dandini).
1. Welcome to Sinderella! What first drew you to the role of Dandini, and how would you describe your take on the character?
Frankie: Honestly, I was drawn to Dandini because he’s the perfect mix of charm, mischief, and chaos. Three things I would associate with my own personality, so this will come naturally to me. It’s all about having fun with the character and giving the audience someone they can laugh with and at, in equal measure, with lots of sass and sparkle, of course.
2. You’ve performed in some fabulous venues, from resort stages to theatre productions — how does it feel stepping into a West End pantomime at the iconic Scala?
Frankie: When I first stepped onto the West End’s Royal Ballet & Opera stage, it was a huge pinch-me moment. I remember thinking how far I have come from the little theatres back home in Edinburgh. When I was in professional training, what got me through the most difficult days was knowing that one day I’ll be on stage entertaining live audiences. That, for me, is the greatest feeling on earth. The fact that I get paid to do what I love the most in this world still seems surreal. I used to travel to London often before moving here. I would get off at King’s Cross station, and every time walk outside the ICONIC Scala Theatre. Its famous art deco architecture dominating the street, and now I’m going to be working on that stage. A full circle moment!
3. The show promises “raucous laughter, innuendos and unexpected encounters” — what’s been the cheekiest or most surprising moment in rehearsals so far?
Frankie: The cast are all completely bonkers but in the best way possible. I just know it’s going to be an absolute scream!
4. Dandini is often the Prince’s right-hand man — but in Sinderella, things are never quite traditional! Without giving too much away, how does your Dandini fit into this naughty twist on the fairytale?
Frankie: All I’m going to say is, what happens in the Palace stays in the Palace, “WINK WINK”.
5. The production is packed with iconic pop anthems — which number are you most excited to perform, and why?
Frankie: ALL OF THEM. But if I had to pick one, then obviously it’s going to be Madonna because she is the ultimate QUEEN! Her discography is so iconic that you really need to do it well. Everyone remembers when she shocked the world by rolling about the MTV stage in a wedding dress, singing Like a Virgin in a very religious America. She pushed boundaries like no other female artist has ever done.
6. Panto is all about big personalities and audience interaction. How do you keep the energy alive and the laughs rolling, especially in those unpredictable moments?
Frankie: I feel very at home in the Panto environment. Especially adult panto, as you have much freer rein on stage. Things are meant to go wrong. That’s one of the funniest parts about the show… AUTHENTICITY! I also work well under pressure and can improvise easily at the drop of a hat.
7. Finally, why should audiences come see Sinderella this Christmas — and what can they expect from Frankie Duncan’s Dandini?
Frankie: Audiences should come see Sinderella because it’s the ultimate Christmas night out in the heart of London. It’s outrageous, hilarious, with so much heart. If you want to leave your troubles at the door and be taken to the land of panto for two hours, then there is no better place to be this Christmas. As for my take on Dandini… Well, let’s just say he’s got all the swagger and charm you’d want to see from the Prince’s right-hand man. I’ll keep the audience on their toes every night!
