Review of The Tap Pack at The Peacock

The Tap Pack Following on from Australia’s hit tap dancing film and stage show Tap Dogs is The Tap Pack. Inspired by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. The Tap Pack mixes timeless style with innovative, energetic tap dancing.

This show is a real pick ‘n’ mix with dance sections, singing and comedy. It’s definitely an entertaining night out and has moments of sheer brilliance. The dynamic dancing is excellent at all times and demonstrates real flair and talent. Whilst it may not have the wow factor of some shows such as Tap Dogs or the dazzle of others like 42nd Street, the dancing alone makes this show a real success.

The five hugely talented dancers: Jesse Rasmussen, Thomas J Egan, Sean Mulligan, Max Patterson and Ben Brown are stylish and have brilliant stage presence. The pacey choreography is performed with grace, precision and flair. Thomas J Egan, particularly, impresses during his improvisational section. The talent and skill shown in this section alone make it worth the ticket.

The show comprises of various tap sequences from stylish ensemble, unison sections to an amazing Wild West sequence which allows the cast to fully show off their nimble footwork. The stage is utilised throughout and the lighting, designed by Trudy Dalgleish, is bright and cheerful. At times the show feels over scripted and rehearsed, however, the magnificent dancing makes up for the slightly ‘cruise ship’ feel at times.

The four-piece band playing live on stage are brilliant and the audience are treated to some fantastic well-loved songs ranging from Nat King Cole to Ed Sheeran, Gordon Goodwin to Noel Gallagher. The musical arrangements are excellent, making even the modern hits into smooth, jazzy numbers.

This is clearly a slick show that has been perfected over time. With outstanding tap work, audience participation and a dynamic range of songs it is a real hit with the audience. This production is an excellent night’s entertainment and is certain to put a smile on your face.
