Running on Empty at the Soho Theatre and Tour Dates

Running On EmptyFollowing the successful one woman tour de force Small Talk, selected as part of British Council Edinburgh Showcase 2013 in this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Probe’s Artistic Director Antonia Grove (twice Critics Circle and Time Out National Dance Awards nominee) collaborates with director Jo McInnes (Royal Court), writer Brad Birch (Soho Theatre, Royal Court), choreographer Charlie Morrissey (Siobhan Davies),  song writer Lee Ross (Olivier Award nominee) and designer Fabrice Serafino (Rambert, National Theatre, Hull Truck), to bring a unique experience to the audience with live music and a cast of three exceptional performers.

Running On Empty is the story of Man, Woman and their repeated collision over time, travelling through dreams, fears and memory. Absurd and sometimes devastating, the work moves between the epic and the intimate, exploring our resilience to loss, our struggle for a future and the emptiness we overcome to survive through dance, text and song.

Probe Artistic Director Antonia Grove said: “I look to combine my love of dance, spoken word and music and to find ways that those elements can exist together effectively in harmony and discord.  I continue to be driven to create work that deals in both fantasy and reality, with characters that have all the difficulties of real people and tell stories about the complexity of human relationships. With Running On Empty we look at human resilience after loss, our fears for the future, and our survival of the present — from the dark and surreal world of dreams to the intricate and sometimes absurd nature of our daily human interactions.

Probe is a dance-theatre performance company founded in 2004 by Antonia Grove and Theo Clinkard who came together as dancers, artistic directors, curators and producers to commission work to perform as a duo. Since 2008 Antonia has continued to develop projects for Probe as sole Artistic Director. Probe’s previous productions have earned the company its much respected reputation. The company’s previous credits include Small Talk (2012), May (2011), Magpie (2008) and Have we met somewhere before? (2005), among which May (2011) was nominated for the 2011 London Theatre Award.

Antonia Grove trained at the Rambert School and has danced with Rambert Dance Company (1998-2003), the National Theatre, Random Dance, The Cholmondeleys, Charles Linehan, New Art Club, Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre, Bonachela Dance Company, and the Clod Ensemble, among others.  As a dancer Antonia has twice been nominated for the Critics Circle National Dance Awards, was nominated for the 2005 Time Out Live Award and in 2004 performed The Place Prize winning piece E2 7SD by Rafael Bonachela. In 2006 her performance in Probe’s Soledad won the Guglielmo Ebreo Award and Critics Choice Award.

As a choreographer Antonia has made works for Resolution!, Rambert choreographic platforms, INTOTO Dance Company, Bifem a Russian play, Yorkshire Youth Dancers, Gloucester Youth Dance, Hampshire Youth Dance Company, Central School of Ballet, Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Sussex Downs college, The Frome Festival and North West Graduate Dance Company.
