Theatre Alibi tours adaptation of I Believe in Unicorns

I Believe In Unicorns TourI Believe in Unicorns An adaptation by Daniel Jamieson of the book by Michael Morpurgo and directed by Nikki Sved at the Polka Theatre 12th to 15th March and touring until 9th May 2015.

Set in Croatia, Morpurgo’s tale is inspired by a visit to Russia where he witnessed a standing ovation for an old man who had rescued all the books from a library which had caught fire.

Moved by this experience, Morpurgo wrote the story of Tomas Porec who hates books, until he meets the Unicorn Lady, an inspirational librarian, who entrances him with her irresistible tales.

The stories he hears from the Unicorn Lady draw Tomas in and become central to his life. From that time on, he and his friends just want to listen to the tales which will change the course of Tomas’s life forever.

The show is about the power of the imagination and the value of stories. It contains tales within the main story, including a version of the Noah’s Ark story and Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Match Girl.

Inspired by paper sculpture, the set is full of inventive surprises and is designed by Trina Bramman. As well as storytelling and puppetry, the show includes live music, influenced by the Balkans and specially composed for violin, electric guitar and accordion.

The tour follows performances in Philadelphia, where the company has been selected to perform at the International Performing Arts for Youth Showcase, which takes place from 21 to 24 January.

Theatre Alibi is best known for productions which are designed for children but also appeal to adults. Earlier this year, the company’s success was recognised by Arts Council England who made a three-year National Portfolio funding award to the organisation.
