Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre confirm Jesus Christ Superstar North American Tour

Jesus Chris SuperstarRegent’s Park Open Air Theatre have today confirmed the announcement by Stephen Gabriel, President and Executive Producer of Work Light Productions, that their Olivier and Evening Standard Award-winning production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical Jesus Christ Superstar will commence a North American Tour in the Autumn of 2019.

Superstar speaks to both theatre audiences and concert music fans. This production pays tribute to the historic 1971 Billboard Album of the Year while creating a modern, theatrical world that is uniquely fresh and inspiring,” said Stephen Gabriel, President of Work Light Productions.

Directed by Timothy Sheader, the creative team also includes Tom Scutt (set and costume design), Drew McOnie (choreography), Tom Deering (music supervision) and Lee Curran (lighting design). The Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and Evening Standard Award for Best Musical, selling out two consecutive engagements in 2016 and 2017.

Jesus Christ Superstar is a proven musical phenomenon with a worldwide fan base. As demonstrated by NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, this epic work attracted over 9.6 million viewers, earned the highest ratings in its time period, and received the highest critical ranking of any live musical event on network TV. Now, almost 10 years after the last major tour in the US, this award-winning Regent’s Park production will play over 50 markets throughout North America.

The Really Useful Group (Producer) is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s theatre producing and rights licensing company and controls the theatrical rights for all of Andrew’s works, including The Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Sunset Boulevard and School of Rock – The Musical. Work Light Productions (Producer) is dedicated to creating and producing live entertainment. The Lyric Opera of Chicago, have also today confirmed full casting for the production which plays 27 April – 20 May 2018. The cast is led by Broadway performer Heath Saunders (Jesus), three-time GRAMMY Award-nominated soul singer Ryan Shaw (Judas), tUnE-yArDs tour vocalist Jo Lampert (Mary Magdalene), Broadway and Postmodern Jukebox performers Michael Cunio (Pilate) and Mykal Kilgore (Simon Zealotes), Diane Coffee frontman Shaun Fleming (Herod), Cavin Cornwall, who reprises his Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre performance (Caiaphas), Broadway artist Joseph Anthony Byrd (Annas), and Chicago-based artist Andrew Mueller (Peter).

Joining the cast are Candace Edwards, Keirsten Hodgens and Sandyredd (Soul Girls), Eric A. Lewis, Drew King and Antwayn Hopper (Priests), and an ensemble of 33 – including 13 members of the Lyric Opera Chorus. The ensemble includes Ashley Andrews (also Dance Captain for the production; Ashley appeared in the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production in 2016), Caleb Baze, Isaiah Tyrelle Boyd, Hoss Brock, Darilyn Burtley, Matthew Carroll, Jerusha Cavazos, William M. Combs, Richard Crandle, Matt Deitchman, Janet Marie Farr, Joseph Fosselman, Brad Giovanine, Scott Gryder, Haley Hannah, Angel Lozada, Adam Michaels, Gabriel Mudd, Kenneth Nichols, Jennifer Noble, James Odom, Kristen Paulicelli, Christina Pecce, Thomas Lewis Potter, David Robbins, Jaquez Andrew Sims, Mais Surace, Clay Thomson, Corinne Wallace-Crane, Ron Watkins, Sherry Watkins, Jonah D Winston, and Michelle Wrighte.

Top talents from The Green Mill, Jazz Showcase, and Chicago Jazz Festival stages form the Jesus Christ Superstar rhythm section including well-known Chicago musicians and recording artists, including Green Mill regular Pete Benson (keyboard), pianist, conductor, and composer Jo Ann Daugherty (keyboard), in-demand studio player and composer Kraig McCreary (guitar), rock, jazz and experimental music veteran Steve Roberts (guitar), versatile percussionist Bob Rummage (drums), and seasoned rhythm-and-blues artist Chuck Webb (bass). Outside the jazz arena, these musicians have been heard alongside such renowned vocalists as Aretha Franklin, Dolly Parton, Melissa Etheridge, and more. Rounding out the Chicago-driven musical talent for Jesus Christ Superstar are 31 members of the Lyric Opera Orchestra.

Also joining the Creative Team from the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre team are Simon Hardwick (Associate Choreographer), Poppy Hall (Costume Supervisor) and James Hassett (Sound Engineer).
