Theatre Madness Festival 2016 celebrating 10 years of performances

Theatre Madness 2016FAITH Drama Productions are celebrating 10 years of performances, nurturing talent and supporting communities through the arts. The Theatre Madness Festival will kick off festivities at Newham’s Stratford Circus Arts Circus – a space similarly known for its community ethos and varied artistic programme. The festival launched originally as a way of engaging local people with theatre during a time when the Olympic Games was dominating the cultural sphere.

Artistic Director, Gbemisola Ikumelo says: “In 2012 the prompt was for local people to create a short piece inspired by the Olympic values. But the festival’s identity changes each time we do it because the challenge changes. Our last challenge was for new Theatre companies to create a play for a space we gave them. People created plays in a kitchen, a church tower and even a toilet cubicle! This year we want to see challengers write and direct something never seen before. We also want to see how they respond to working with restrictions, hence our secret word but they will also be given a cast to write for, which will immediately inform the stories they tell

So what can winners expect from this opportunity? Previous winners, Shrink Theatre say: “Winning Theatre Madness was a massive achievement for us and one we are very proud of. The opportunity to develop and grow as a new theatre company has been priceless and we are extremely honoured to have been part of it.

Shrink Theatre’s winning play ‘Northfields’ is currently in development as a full production with plans for it to run later this year in partnership with FAITH Drama Productions.

The challenge officially began on Friday the 5th of August 2016. Successful applicants met at the Stratford Circus Arts Centre to meet their cast for the first time and were provided with the secret word that will inspire their play.
The performance night will take place in September and members of the audience will vote for their favourite plays.
